P:roject Lights On (Finnish/English mixed language topic about abused fixed wheel bikepacking frame)

Siis onhan mulla tällainenkin.Tässä Specialized takavalossa käyttöaika latauksella on yllättävän lyhyt.

Valaisimen voisi kenties kiinnittää sellaiseen etuhaarukkaan, jossa on kiinnityspultille sopiva poraus. Jostain laatikosta löysin käyttämättömän Tange Technomic ohjauslaakerin, joka vaikutti tähän haarukkaan sopivalta.

P:LO distant rear

P:LO There’d be clearance for wider than 32mm tires if only…

P:LO …this almost useless rear brake bridge were a little higher (perhaps wider too)…

…so the rear axle could slide half an inch forward…

…and I’d be happy to ride on with 32mm rear tires also with trailer coupled to the bike.

Too bad at the moment I don’t have a place and equipment to modify the frame closer for its past, present and hopefully future fixed wheel bike packing use. The frame has been used with different trailers, front and rear racks, panniers, baskets, saddle bags, handlebar bags, and other equipment plus diverse parts attached to facilitate mixed track/urban/utilitarian/travel/gravel grind/all road bike life.

Why not Surly Cross Check you might ask? Because I didn’t have one. Instead I got this frame second hand years ago next to nothing when I couldn’t offer purchasing anything new. See, I urgently needed a (track) bike for therapeutic use recovering from severe trauma.

Random finds from local stash that I used to build a bike yesterday evening (gasp!).

  • New Tange-Seiki Technomic headset
  • DT Swiss RR511 622-21 rim (paintmarks on NDS side, tried acetone - got headache, next time use respiratory protection)
  • Halo TK Rear Hub, black, fix w/clear lockring
  • CN Spoke black aero spoke 270mm, 32 pcs
  • DT Swiss PHR washers, 32 pcs
  • DT Swiss brass nipples 12mm, 32 pcs
  • Mavic UST Tape 25mm roll leftovers
  • Well used Schwalbe Spicer Active E25 35-622 wired tire (w/ broken bead, why did I store this?)
  • Used Schwalbe 622 tube
  • FSA BB cups w/bearings et al for 30mm spindle
  • Used FSA Gossamer crankset w/34t single cw (chainline shimmed to equal the rear)
  • Dura-Ace NJS sprocket 13t
  • Leftover KMC Z1 ⅛" chainlinks riveted to make enough chain (note to throw these to metal waste ASAP)
  • Abused Shimano PD-M324 pedals (need better ones, throw these away or maybe spares?)

  • Old abused and poorly cut Race Face riser bar (Why do I stash crap again?)
  • Odd pair of foam grips
  • Random black plastic bar end plug (one only!)
  • Shims for stem/bar combo

  • Three used Avid hybraulic brake calipers (same model for cannibalisation, why have I stored these?)

  • Used Avid pads, retainers, springs (didn’t bother cleaning, see previous note on acetone)
  • Used Avid brake hose, cut to length
  • Used Avid hose nuts, cleaned
  • Used Avid inserts (not Thingamajics though which IMO would have been easier to remove BTW)
  • New Avid olives (!Thingamajic)
  • Used CSPs and caliper fixing bolts
  • Used Avid IS-PM adapter for used front 160mm rotor
  • Used WTB Volt saddle
  • Used seat post w/SB, freely adjustable angle

  • DOT5.1 fluid (new!)
  • Used random Shimano SLX front wheel, used SM-RT54 rotor, new Herrmans blue 559-622 rim band, used Schwalbe Spicer tire and random used tube

Notice a pattern here?

I made a short test ride in the darkness. I had to use rechargeable lighting since I haven’t yet decided how to power the light which started this thread a year ago.

As expected the brake made loud screeching. I noticed the neighborhood (sans the nice Scotsman, the Polish/Finnish, the Dutch/Finnish and the Finnish/German families) turning their lights on. Oh well…

Want to see the current stage? I might have pics coming later today. Sorry folks, I was too tired so didn’t edit the topic yesterday.

I have a set of never used 40-622 GG tires I could use - not in the rear but front - which measures true to size on DT RR511 rims. The only problem is that the tire I was thinking is only available in 35/40/45-622. Which tire is it? Please check here.

Panaracer Gravelking SK 28-622 might be an interim option if it were true to size (and not too tall, which I don’t know) on my designated rim.

I’m open for suggestions regarding the P:LO as a whole, parts, frame modding, whatever.

Stay tuned, I might keep editing and posting more hopefully in the not so distant future.
