In recent years the global cycling movement Critical Mass has flourished remarkably in Zurich with hundreds, even thousands joining the Mass every last Friday of the month. Their vibrant spirit sets an inspiring example for all of us.
Unfortunately, some are failing to see the beauty and richness this brings to the cultural landscape of their city.
In July 2023 the city official assessed that Critical Mass is an unauthorized demonstration and participation will be punished accordingly, unless a permit is applied for in advance. Since there is no one in charge of organizing the ride, no one is in a position to apply for permission either. On 28th July and 25th August cyclists were harassed and fined for their shared presence in the public space.
For the rest of the world, this looks like an authoritarian and backward development in the city of Zurich.
It is absurd to be criminalizing peaceful cyclists. If anything, we need more people to take an active part in bringing the social change our world so desperately needs.
The repression of one Mass is a repression of all Masses - Join us on September 8th in celebration of cycling and solidarity in the worldwide Critical community. We meet at Veturitallinpiha 19:45 and ride through Helsinki.
