Using the Metro in Helsinki

During my trip to Helsinki a couple of weeks ago I noticed that there are no barriers on the Metro, I was just wondering how many of you actually pay to use it. The 2.50€ no matter how many stops you go seems crazy to me, very unfair.

So my questions are…

  • Do you pay?
  • If not, have you ever been caught?
  • If you get caught do you really get fined on the spot?

I know we all SHOULD pay and it keeps the network going but it’ll be really really expensive to use every day!

yes have been caught and yes you get fined very much €€uro. in metro its usually an ambush in the end of escalator not in the trains themselves

most pppl who use it buy monthly ticket for 40€ or 20€ if youre a student

i just dont use public transportation anymore

Yep, the fine is 80€ nowdays, and the ticketchecking is always an ambush. If your a foreign student, however, it might be possible to get half off the price. Can someone confirm this?

I’m not using the public transport either, anymore.

heard that they’ll raise the fine from 80€—>100€

still not paying

We always pay.
Maybe you don’t understand the finnish way to make a good city.

It’s not always an ambush, I’ve seen smurffis on top of the escalators as well, checking tickets before you go down. And they raid the metro trains too.

The fine is 80€ so the 40€/20€ per month isn’t really that expensive.

The 30 day fee is 46,50€ (23,30), the longer period you buy at one go, the cheaper it gets (by a fraction).

This is why I'm asking, here in the UK nobody would pay but then we always have someone checking tickets on trains and if you haven't got a ticket you can buy one off them, you don't get fined.

I’m genuinely interested to know whether locals believe the cost to be fair because it’s not what I’m used to.

For everyone that says they don’t use the Metro anymore how do you get around when it snows?

We got this thing called “vittu, kyl tuol voi ajaa”. A.K.A spiked tyres.

Edit: too slow

Might not even need studded tyres, depends on the year really.

And riding at winter is a ton of fun.

I traveled 7 months without a ticket until i got fined. I saved 240euros.

Just spend the money you would use on tickets/fines on proper winter riding gear.

And once i got checked for ticket 9 times in a.month. You should buy a ticket.

welcome to jyväskylä. ~1-2 busses per hour, 30 minute wait for many connections and 3,60€/trip...

The single tickets are very expensive but if you get the travel card it’s a lot more reasonable. For 90€ a month you can travel within the entire metropolitan area (Helsinki, Vantaa, Espoo) and just within Helsinki it’s half of that.

the 2,5€ ticket isn’t just a metro ticket, but allows you to use buses/trams as well for an hour. Regardless, it isn’t a very fair price. Luckily as a student I only pay 0,9€ for a single ticket or 23€ monthly

i think 2,5 euro ticket is fair because you can tyckiting from one side of city to other. i can say when i was in kof2014, i cyclisting to east center very long time, 10 kilometers drunk is long ride home.

but then you can take biek on metro and cycling from station to anywhere. or dont know, i always riding in rain.
